The GSEH is staring a new monthly E-Newsletter to help communicate with our followers more effectively. We hope to bring you more behind the scenes content on the status of birds, projects, releases, etc. with more details than social media posts. It is our hope to stay in better contact with our guests and people that have an interest in our facility during these Covid times when our ability to be open is difficult. Today, we were happy to share our 35th and 36th eagle releases with Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma staff at the powwow grounds. Both of these eagles were injured earlier this year when they were hit by cars and needed several months of care in our ICU room and rehabilitation flight cage. With the completion of the wild eagle nesting season, we were able to get these two individuals back into the wild.
We will be restarting tours on a very limited basis starting the week of July 4th. There have been some changes to our policies regarding when and how tours are conducted so please take a look at http://eagles.iowanation.org/tour-information to view all current tour policies.
We look forward to adding more days and times when the weather cools down and our volunteer program is re-established.
Just an update for 2021. Due to the continued problems associated with COVID19, the GSEH is still closed to the public and will continue to suspend outreach activities indefinitely. This will help ensure our staff members stay healthy so we can continue our quality care for our birds. We have continued and will continue to pick up injured bald and golden eagles from around the state of Oklahoma.

The Aviary Assistant will assist the Aviary Assistant Manager in the daily care of the eagles, daily cleaning of the aviary, and educational presentations as needed. The incumbent will perform routine office activities necessary to facilitate the goals and objectives of the Eagle Aviary Program. This position is currently 3 months but, it has the possibility of being a permanent position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Participate in cleaning and disinfecting all cages as scheduled.
Ensure all offices, break areas, and buildings are cleaned and disinfected.
Participate in training new hires and volunteers to make sure that they know how all tasks are performed and at what quality the work should be at.
Responsible for the daily observation of raptor health and welfare.
Report maintenance issues and potential safety hazards to Aviary Supervisor or Aviary Management.
Attend training and provide Aviary staff a presentation on of information gained in training.
Assist in preparing food for eagles on a scheduled basis.
Maintain a detailed log of aviary activities and program files as determined by funding sources.
Assist in outreach activities including presentations, tours, and brochures for Tribal members and the community.
Assist with upkeep of the facility as necessary including basic construction and grounds maintenance.
Ensure education birds are properly cared for and trained if part of education program.
Participate in aviary committees, releases, fundraisers, etc. when asked or when on possesses skills that would benefit the project.
Perform other duties as needed.
Education and Experience:
Previous experience working with or handling large raptors.
Preference given to applicants who have volunteered at least 80 hours at the Iowa Tribe’s Gray Snow Eagle House.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Must possess good communication skills when dealing with Tribal members and the community.
Knowledge of Ioway’s or Native American cultural activities preferred.
Is required to sit and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
Routine exposure to outside weather conditions, bird holding areas where noise level in the work environment may be loud.
Ability to lift and/or move items of up to fifty pounds.
Must be able to read, understand, apply and retain knowledge of departmental rules, regulations and policies.
Knowledge of animal behavior.
Knowledge of procedures used for the proper care and handling of native birds.
Knowledge of aviary safety rules and regulations.
Ability to tolerate stress working with native birds.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions including procedures for care and maintenance of animals, exhibit, service and holding spaces.
Ability to exhibit patience when caring for animals.
Ability to exercise judgment concerning assigned work activities.
Skill in tact and diplomacy when interacting with co-workers, visitors and volunteers.
Skill in observation in order to recognize and evaluate conditions of animal health, diets and behavior.
Ability to work long hours when rescues occur or veterinary appointments are necessary.

The Grey Snow Eagle House is seeking entries for its 1st annual Art and Poetry Contest. The Contest is open to residents Oklahoma who are enrolled in Kindergarten to 12th grade. Winners in art and poetry will be selected in each of five grade-level categories (K-1, 2-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12). All winners will have their artwork and compositions featured on the GSEH website: eagles.iowanation.org, GSEH social media, and GSEH’s annual newsletter: WingBeat. Winners will be announced on GSEH’s Facebook on April 26th.
GSEH welcomes artwork entries in the form of paintings or drawings inspired by one or more of the birds that GSEH rescues and protects, such as bald eagles, golden eagles, and any of our ambassador birds. You can learn more information about the birds GSEH rescues and protects at eagles.iowanation.org. All artwork entries must be original and created by hand using markers, crayons, colored pencils and/or paint. No artwork containing photographs, photocopies, tracing or computer‐generated designs will be accepted.
GSEH welcomes poems that explore the themes “Raptors in the Wild”, “How I Can Help Raptors” and “Why Raptors are Important” through poetry. All poem entries must be original and legibly hand written or typed. The maximum word count for a poem entry is 200 words.
